If your PR card is expired and you have a question that, how do I renew my PR card? The permanent residence card is an essential document required to use a commercial carrier in order for you to travel to Canada. Now, what happens if your PR card expired? Let’s look below.
1. New Permanent Resident
New permanent residents don’t need to apply for a permanent resident card (PR card). We will send one to you when you immigrate to Canada if you tell us your Canadian mailing address. You have 180 days after immigrating to send it to us. If we don’t get it in time, then you have to apply for your card. There is a $50 processing fee for PR card applications.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a PR card, you need to:
- Be a permanent resident, and
- Submit your application in Canada.
You should only apply for a PR card if:
- You didn’t receive your PR card within 180 days of immigrating to Canada;
- Your PR card is expired or will expire in less than nine months;
- Your PR card has been lost, stolen, or destroyed; or
- You legally changed your name and need to update your PR card.
2. Are you Eligible to Enter into Canada with the Expired PR Card?
You can live and work in Canada with the expired PR card if you are already in Canada. However, we recommend you to renew your PR card as soon as possible. This is because you may have an urgent plan to travel outside of Canada and you would only be allowed to return back to Canada if you have a valid PR card.
Your PR card expired outside Canada
As per the rules and regulation of immigration to Canada, One cannot board to Canada in a commercial flight or Train or a Boat/cruise. It's necessary to have a PR card, which is not expired. However, some may suggest you enter through land route (i.e. USA) but that could be a hassle practice for you. Therefore, we always suggest you enter Canada with the valid card.
