Want to Know How Long Can You Stay in Canada As a Visitor? Find Out!
Visitor Visa

Are you a visiting Canada and unsure about how long can you stay in Canada as a visitor? Well, you are not alone. This is a common concern among a lot of people because most of the high commissions and embassies fail to offer any clear-cut explanation regarding the duration of stay.

The Expiry Date on Your Visa Does Not Determine the Duration of Stay

A lot of people get confused when they see the date of issue and date of expiry on their Canadian visa. This expiry day basically authorizes the visa holders to enter Canada before the indicated date. You will be either receiving a single entry or a multiple entry visa. On a multiple entry visa, you are allowed to request permission to enter Canada several times before the date of expiry while on a single entry visa, you can visit only once before the expiration date.

Port of Entry Officer Determines How Long You Can Stay

So, analyzing the visa is not going to help you understand how long you can stay in Canada. But, the officer at the port of entry can help you. This officer has the sole authority to determine how long you are allowed to stay in Canada as a visitor by stamping your passport. The stamp is going to allow you to stay for six months from the date you came to Canada. However, there can also be circumstances where the officer at the port office will authorize a stay that is less than six months. The duration of your stay will be indicated in your passport and you will find it just below the stamp.

You Must Not Exceed Your Stay Duration

As a visitor to Canada, it is best if you do not exceed your stay. In case you do, you are going to face difficulty in getting a visa for visiting Canada in the future. Also, it may lead to you getting arrested without a warrant or you may receive a one-year exclusion order. However, if you are overstaying for less than ninety days, you can re-apply to restore your status. Moreover, it is possible for you to apply for an extension before thirty days of your expiration date.

Also, please note that if you are visiting Canada as a visitor, you will not be allowed to study or work without a valid permit.
